On Saturday, March 25, 28 members of the ECHS Mountain Bike Racing Team competed at the NorCal league’s third race of the season at Fort Ord on the Monterey peninsula. The riders arrived on Friday and enjoyed a pre-ride of the course that left them in awe of the beautiful scenery, from the sweeping vistas to the Spanish moss hanging from the trees. They then gathered at the team hotel for dinner and a quick team meeting to set goals for the race before tucking in early for a good night’s sleep. They were up again before dawn on race day for a hearty breakfast and then headed back to the course. A frigid morning gave way to another gorgeous, sunny day, and, with the race’s tie dye theme, the entire grounds were awash in colorful clothing perfectly suited to the weather. In turn, the riders all attacked the ~4.5 mile course with about 500 feet of elevation gain, with the Varsity boys completing 3 laps (just under 14 miles) and everybody else completing 2 laps (about 9 miles). Everyone gave it their all, and it was a great showing for the team. We had 6 riders end up on the podium, and ECHS came in 3rd place for overall team points earned among Division I teams, just behind Berkeley High and Salinas High. Our next race, the final one of the regular season, will be on Sunday, April 16th, at Six Sigma Winery near Clear Lake.
